The Russian plane broke up in mid-air with the nose section falling vertically and the rear section with the engines continuing, stalling and then plumetting. Had both aircraft followed those automated instructions, the collision would not have occurred but instead, unaware of the TCAS instructions, Nielson repeated his instructions to the Russian plane and the crew ignored the automated warning.Īt 11.35pm the planes collided at almost a right angle at an altitude of 34,890 feet with the Boeing's tail vertical stabilizer slicing completely through Flight 2937 just ahead of the wings. Meanwhile on the Boeing the TCAS told that crew to descend too. An investigation which followed found he told the passenger plane crew to descend by a 1,000ft to avoid a collision but second after they changed course the in-built traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) told him to climb instead.
